Suriname radio stations one hour " off air "
as a silent protest
All radiostations united in the VRTS in
Suriname were silent for one hour in protest against the Surinam
Board for Music licencing / Sasur. The construction right now is
that board members at the Department of Justice are financed by
the influx of music royalties. Not different from similar organisations
in other countries they are firstly funding their own existence,
secondly a few artists / composers are paid much money, but
most artists never see a penny while their music is being played
but not registered as being played.
It's a redistribution system making the rich richer and the poor
poorer.
Another problem is that this type of
organisations are able to impose fines and music licenses
according to their own standards and interests - even afterwards
! By this destroying existing music and entertainment related
private businesses and reshaping the Surinam market not
guaranteed free from political motives or private interests.
Suriname is a young republic. Surinam administration and
interest groups in society are still much more closely connected
than e.g. in Western democracies.
Sasur refuses to take into consideration the
position of
parties that are severely hit by these measures; ending up in the role of
a hated tax collector. Just like passage fees ( or staple rights)
in medieval times led to conflicts because of the unfair nature
of taxing
involved.
